Emu Oil Research Release 18th February 2002.
research over the last six years by the participants has provided the following results, which are now being made available to the industry:
Anti Inflammatory Activity Emu oils were tested on rats to determine levels of anti-inflammatory activity. Active oils were then analysed for components, and some of the active components identified. A patent is pending for the key ingredients. Results clearly indicate that Emu oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent compared to other natural oils and NSAIDS.
Genetic Impact on Oil Activity Various genetic strains of emus were reared under the same environment and diet, their oils tested for biological activity. Results clearly indicate that there is a direct correlation between definable genetics and activity level in oil. Farmers will now be able to grow the most appropriate strains of emus for oil yield.
Feed Effects on Oil Activity Emus of a particular genetic strain were reared on different feed regimes (same environment) and their oils tested for biological activity. Results clearly indicate that there is a direct correlation between feed inputs and activity level in oil. Farmers will now be able to minimize feed costs and maximize oil output by using the best feeding regime.
Rendering Temperature Effects on Oil Activity Rendering temperature has a major effect on the retention of oil quality, to the extent of being able to destroy oil activity completely. Trials at different temperatures have identified the optimal rendering temperature to maximize oil activity levels while still ensuring biological safety.
Rendering Methodology to Maximize Oil Value Other critical elements of the oil rendering process have been identified and tests conducted to maximize those variables. In this way the efficacy of Emu oil can be preserved, and in conjunction with the above, define a complete quality assurance system for the production of active Emu oil.
Anecdotal Evidence of Application Ample evidence exists that active Emu oil has positive indications in the treatment of the following diseases:
Rheumatoid arthritis
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Quality Assurance Milestone. There is now, one Emu oil rendering plant in Australia HACCP GMP certified and licensed for the rendering of Emu oil for oral consumption by humans.
